Penthouse 3 is under fire before the final episode for using footage of a real tragedy in the drama

Penthouse 3 is causing controversy for using the actual footage of the Gwangju building collapse accident as a scene in the drama.

Penthouse 3 continues to be involved in another controversy because of a detail in episode 13. In the episode, the news reported on the aftermath of Joo Dan Tae (Uhm Ki Joon) bombing Hera Palace and showed footage of the scene of the collapsed building.

Notably, this footage used in the drama was not created by the production team, but taken from the Gwangju building collapse in June of this year. Penthouse 3 included a real SBS News report into the drama and only edited the subtitles.

Penthouse 3 was also controversial because of its extremist and violent content. Last night, the keyword “Crazy Penthouse” reached the Top of hot searches on Naver.

 Netizens’ comments:

  • How many people died because of this incident and now they put it in the movie?  Never heard anything good about this movie.
  • Can’t they use CGI?
  • It’s only been a few months, I don’t know what they think.
  • Nothing but chaos.
  • What will the victim’s family think when they see this scene??? We really need SBS to make an official statement

Currently, after half a day of controversy, SBS has made an official statement, specifically as follows:

“We are the production staff of Penthouse 3.
We confirm that inappropriate footage from the Gwangju building collapse accident and Pohang earthquake in 2017 was used in the September 3 broadcast of Penthouse 3.
We bow our heads in apology to all the victims of the Gwangju building collapse and the Pohang earthquake and their families, as well as all the viewers for this incident.
After confirming the problematic footage, we’ve asked for it to be removed on all platforms. Furthermore, we will investigate why this footage was used and ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
Once again, we deeply apologize for causing grief and disappointment.”

The final episode will air on September 10.
