Since Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) 2018 is going to follow the previous “coexistence” concept and be held in 3 different countries, including Hongkong, Japan and Thailand, fans have already envisioned the ceremony script.
MAMA 2018 in Thailand
MAMA in Thailand is the opening show of the MAMA Week, which is similar to MAMA 2017 in Vietnam. As usual, the ceremony is to honor outstanding Asian artists of 2018. In the ceremony, the two most anticipated awards are Best of Next for rookies and Worldwide Favorite Artist for A-list stars, which respectively belonged to Wanna One and Seventeen in 2017.
In addition, Thailand is home to many rising Kpop idols. Since the Southeast Asian country is reportedly chosen as a MAMA venue, the Kpop groups including Thai members are most likely to show up. The groups that are expected by fans to appear in MAMA are:
- (G) I-DLE: the talented rookie that debuted in May with member Minnie, who is from Thailand
- GOT7: the leading candidate for Worldwide Favorite Artist with Bambam from Thailand.
- NCT U: In which Ten is a Thai member and Lucas is Thai-Chinese. Their popularity in Thailand is increasing yet they still need more decent promotion.
MAMA in Japan
According to netizens, TWICE is definitely in the line-up. In 2018, the 9-member girlgroup has become one of the Hallyu top groups in Japan and therefore deserves a reward at MAMA. Furthermore, last year, TWICE won Daesang for “Song of the year” with their hit “Signal”.
MAMA in Japan will announce the winners of categories for rookie, dance performance, fashion and Daesang song of the year. By analyzing the Kpop industry of this year, we can expect some noticeable names:
Stray Kids (male rookie)
Produce48’s final group (female rookie)
Wanna One/ SEVENTEEN (best male dance performance)
Gfriend/TWICE/Red Velvet/MOMOLAND (best female dance performance)
Meanwhile, the Daesang song of the year still remains unpredictable. “DDU-DU DDU-DU” (Black Pink) is by far the most popular song yet stands few chances to win due to the tension between Mnet and YG (BLACKPINK’s company). As a result, the award may end up going to any top artist who had a comeback this year.
MAMA in Hongkong
As the spotlight of the MAMA Week, MAMA in Hongkong is undoubtedly the most striking event that we all look forward to.
MAMA in Hongkong includes awards for best male/female solo artist, best male/female/group vocal, Daesang album of the year and Daesang artist of the year. The line-up therefore will be top artists and is expected to remain the same as last year with EXO, BTS, Wanna One, TWICE, Red Velvet, GFriend, GOT7, NCT, SEVENTEEN and with an addition of Produce 48’s group.
Noticeably, since EXO haven’t made any comeback, BTS is strongly believed to win double Daesang awards. After MAMA 2017, fans has been worrying over EXO’s popularity surpassed by BTS.
Is any twist going to happen at the MAMA Week?
