Singer John Legend and his wife – model cum actress Chrissy Teigen – are being criticized by netizens for partying at home under the theme of “Squid Game”.
According to a report by the New York Post on Nov 16th (local time), the two recently enlisted the help of party planners Wife of the Party to construct a party under the theme of Netflix’s “Squid Game” and transform their California home to look like the show’s set. The event featured a maze staircase, bunk beds and large piggy banks stuffed with cash. Teigen also shared snaps from the party on social media that also featured an array of “Squid Game” costumes.
Actors such as “Pretty Little Liars” star Shay Mitchell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson attended the all-star fête. Teigen wrote, “My dream came true of watching my friends fight to the death!” However, fans were not impressed by the party and rather criticized it.
They left comments such as “I’m sorry rich people are literally so tone-deaf”, “‘Squid Game’ was literally about people whose lives were so awful because of being poor that they’d rather play a game of literal life or death to escape going back to poverty and Chrissy Teigen is really reenacting it in her mansion”, “Usually I’m a fan of Chrissy Teigen but there’s something super f–ked up and weird about spending the weekend cosplaying ‘Squid Game’ with your incredibly rich friends”, “This is so beyond tone-deaf as a millionaire to invite your rich friends over and reenact ‘Squid Game’, which is rooted in the violence of capitalism”… Another netizen lamented, “Why do rich people always miss the whole entire point?”
Meanwhile, it is not Teigen’s first time being branded as “tone-deaf” on social media. On the topic of wealth, she once shared that she and Legend were duped into spending $13,000 (15,359,500 won) on a bottle of Cabernet.
