K-netizens react to Chinese netizens’ anger at the “Made in China means Fake” line in K-drama “Anna”

Coupang Play’s original series “Anna”, led by Suzy, has been embroiled in controversy in China.

On June 30th, on Chinese social media platform Weibo, K-drama “Anna” drew much attention as it was No.1 in the real-time most searched keywords ranking. The reason for such interest is because of a post with the hashtag “Controversy over Suzy‘s new drama Anna.

The original poster explained a situation in the drama where Suzy’s character Yumi went to sell a fake watch she received as a gift. After looking at the watch, a store employee said, “I don’t know if this brand is good or not, but this watch was made in China.”

Chinese netizens who watched this scene were outraged at China being described as a place that makes fake things. They even expressed anger at Korea by leaving comments such as, “Korea is a thief country that steals everything from China”, “Korea imports raw materials from China to make goods”, and “Korea cannot succeed without copying China.”
