Japan Line Research announced the 2021 Girl Group Popularity Ranking on October 25. According to a survey of men and women in their teens to 60s nationwide, TWICE, ITZY, and NiziU were listed in various rankings.
TWICE ranked fifth in the overall top 10 in the research, and reaffirmed its popularity by ranking first and second in the favorite female idol group rankings voted by Japanese teenage girls and women in their 20s, respectively. Visual and performance were mentioned as the reason for TWICE’s popularity, drawing attention from fans. In addition, TWICE ranked in the top 10 in both men’s and women’s preference surveys by teens to 50s, proving the love of their local Japanese fans. Accordingly, TWICE will release its third full-length album “Formula of Love: O+T=<3” on November 12th and continue to gain popularity. Expectations are even higher as the group is scheduled to release its ninth Japanese single “Doughnut” on December 15.
Japan Line Research said, “Teenage girls are showing a lot of interest in ITZY. This generation thinks their performance on YouTube is cool,” highlighting ITZY’s popularity. ITZY ranked seventh in the top 10 favorite female idol groups targeting teenage girls, and ranked tenth in the teenage boys category, revealing the potential of a Gen Z fandom. These girls, who gained early recognition, will release their Japanese debut album “IT’z ITZY” on December 22nd and add firepower to their growth.
NiziU proved that it is a popular girl group in Japan by ranking third on the top 10 overall favorite female idol groups. In particular, it is noteworthy that the group ranked first in preference of women in their 30s and 40s. NiziU, which has been a syndrome since its official debut in December 2020, has recently won an award at MTV Video Music Awards JAPAN for the second consecutive year, and released its first full-length album “U” and title song “Chopstick” on November 24 to respond to fans’ love.
JYP wrote a history of girl group success through Wonder Girls, Miss A, TWICE, ITZY, and NiziU. Ahead of the debut of a new girl group in February 2022, various cover contents are currently being released on the new group’s SNS channel “JYPn” to give a glimpse of the members’ solid skills.
Amid rising expectations for a new concept from the hit girl group maker, JYP is actively developing a new girl group debut project, heralding the release of a new member of Plus Alpha, which is expected to strengthen the group’s perfect combination.
