Jeon So-mi said, “Even though YG is in trouble right before my debut, I won’t sway”

Jeon So-mi, a former I.O.I member, expressed her calm inner feelings regarding a series of situations currently surrounding YG Entertainment.

Jeon Somi said, "Even though YG is in trouble right before my debut, I won't sway"

Jeon So-mi held a showcase to mark the release of her debut single “BIRTHDAY” at Shinhan Card Pan Square in Hapjeong-dong, Seoul, on June 12th afternoon.

Jeon So-mi’s happy to be able to debut as a solo, but since her agency – The Black Lable – is a label under YG Entertainment, she is now considered as a singer under YG Entertainment and received both expectations and concerns. This is because YG Entertainment has been at the center of various controversies, including the “Burning Sun” scandal involving Seungri as well as the alleged sexual favors of its chairman Yang Hyun-suk.

On the eve of her debut, a red alert was raised again for her as there were suspicions that iKON’s leader, B.I (Kim Han-bin), had trade drugs and attempted to use it in the past. Although YG has tried to solve the artist’s problem by announcing B.I’s withdrawal from the team and terminating his contract, the public still perceives this agency as a problematic one, and all of its artists are being judged negatively.

Regarding these issues, Jeon So-mi said, “I’ve been preparing for my solo debut for a long time, that’s why I won’t sway and have tried my best.

Jeon So-mi is the trainee who topped Mnet’s “Produce 101” which aired in 2016, and has performed as the center for the project group I.O.I. Since the cancellation of the exclusive contract with her former agency JYP Entertainment in 2018, she has been preparing for a solo debut with her new management company, The Black Label.

BIRTHDAY” is a song that carries the symbolic meaning of the newly born “Jeon So-mi” as a solo artist, composed by the hit-maker Teddy and Jeon So-mi herself.

So-mi will release her debut single “BIRTHDAY” through various online music sites at 6 p.m. today (KST) and start her solo music career.
