Jang Hyuk talks about his return to the noir genre: “I’ve always wanted to play the villain role”

Jang Hyuk revealed what motivated him to participate in the work, “I’ve always wanted to play the villain role.”

Two actors Jang Hyuk and Yoo Oh-sung – who have good taste in action and noir genres – worked together in the movieTomb of the River’ that will be released on November 17th. They took on the roles of Min-seok and Gil-seok, who stand at opposite points over the construction of the largest resort in Gangneung. At the online press conference held on October 15th, Jang Hyuk revealed what motivated him to participate in the work, “I’ve always wanted to play the villain role.”

Min-seok (played by Jang Hyuk) is a person who had achieved whatever he wanted by any means and methods. Conflict between Gil-seok and him begins as he tries to take away the resort business right from the gang where Gil-seok is an underboss. However, Jang Hyuk explained that Min-seok is not a straightforward character like ordinary villains. He added, “I expressed this character in a way that makes people feel bad for him even though he’s a villain.”

The actor also shared his feelings about reuniting with Yoo Oh-sung after 6 years since the drama ‘The Merchant: Gaekju 2015’, “I felt overwhelmed by acting on the screen with Oh-sung.” Yoo Oh-sung said, “I filmed ‘Beat’ and ‘Friend’ by good fortune. ‘Tomb of the River’ is a work that helps me complete the noir trilogy. The lines are romantic, so this movie’s genre is like romantic noir to me.”

Director Yoon Young-bin, who was in charge of directing, emphasized that the most important reason for choosing the two actors was ‘acting ability’. He expressed his gratitude, “There are many factors in casting actors, but star quality and image will naturally follow if acting skills are supported. Fortunately, all the cast accepted the casting proposal.” The supporting actors also praised Jang Hyuk and Yoo Oh-sung‘s acting ability.

Oh Dae-hwan, who played Hyung-geun – Gil-seok’s right-hand man, shared, “I was nervous when hearing that Yoo Oh-sung was casted. However, we worked together comfortably as he was very delicate at the filming site.” Lee Chae-young, who transformed into Eun-seon – the only woman in the movie, confessed, “I was able to complete the character because the seniors received me well. I asked many questions and also received a lot of advice.”
