“Is she an airhead?”, netizens are angry at the female character’ build in “Snowdrop”

“Snowdrop” is criticized once again for portraying the female lead, a student from Hosu Women’s University, which is based on the real Ewha Womans University, as nothing but an airhead.

Suspicions of historical distortion of JTBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Snowdrop” are still growing. In addition to the strong criticism from netizens, many companies have canceled their advertising and sponsorship one after another.

Snowdrop” is about the love story between a North Korean spy dispatched to South Korea in 1987 during the dictatorship era and a student of a prestigious women’s university who joined the campaign for democratization. Along with the allegations regarding historical distortion, such as the beautification of the National Security Agency, the drama is even criticized for disparaging the democratization movement.

In the first and second episodes of “Snowdrop,” which aired on Dec 18th and 19th, Eun Young-ro (Jisoo) was seen hiding spy Lim Soo-ho (Jeong Hae-in) in her dormitory, convinced that he was an activist student.

Although this judgment could pose a risk to those around her, Eun Young-ro acted incomprehensibly, such as hiding Lim Soo-ho and providing him food. The drama depicts a “typical female college student” stereotype who falls in love and makes indiscriminate judgments.

Then, what did Ewha Womans University’s student, which became the inspiration for this drama’s background, look like at the time?

Ewha Womans University

Lim Mi-ae, the president of Ewha Womans University’s student council, said in 2007 that there were many surprising things while preparing for the June uprising in the university newsletter.

She said, “We had borrowed an amplifier from the Nakwon shopping mall (for the rally), but then the owner came to demand us to return the amplifier and quarreled with the students who were in charge of the rally, saying that our renting time had run out, right in the middle of the rally. At that time, the word “Just buy it!” erupted among the crowd, and it spread to such a loud roar that shook the whole stadium. Money began to gather in a hat from somewhere, and even after buying the best amplifier at the time with that money gathered by us Ewha students, there was still a lot left.”

netizens comments

Online community theqoo users strongly criticized the drama production team in the comments, saying, “It’s ridiculous that they portray these people like that,” and “How can you draw such cool people as only a pretty airhead?”

Netizens lamented that Yoo Hyun-mi, the writer of “Snowdrop,” was from Ewha Womans University, saying, “The worst thing is that an alumni, even a student from that specific time, wrote a drama like ‘Snowdrop.‘”
