Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’s Lee Sang Yi: A perfect but pitiful second male lead

Viewers can’t help but feel sorry for the second male lead character in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, played by actor Lee Sang Yi.

Most viewers think of Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha as a healing, comforting, and emotional drama. This is shown in a clearer way in the latest episode. Besides the main characters, the supporting characters are also well developed with kind and sincere personalities.  One of them is the second male lead Ji Seung Hyun (Lee Sang Yi), also known as Ji PD – a character that is loved by everyone in the Gongjin village.

Ji Seung Hyun is a famous production director who comes to Du Sik’s (Kim Seon Ho) seaside village to do a variety show. At Gongjin, he reunites with his junior who is also the girl he had feelings for back when he was a student – Yoon Hye Jin (Shin Min Ah). He then decides to do the thing he did not have enough courage to before, is to start the journey to win Hye Jin’s heart.

Ji PD always shows his enthusiasm. He constantly helps Hye Jin, prepares food to send to her house, etc. As viewers gradually watch each episode, they realize that not all second male lead characters are the same, Ji PD has some differences from almost all second male lead characters in Korean dramas.

It’s rare to see the second male lead worry about the female lead’s health, sleep and meals as much as in this drama. In fact, not many people in real life can do this, sincerely caring for someone you are not yet close to. Anyone with such a personality deserves to be treasured.

Viewers enjoy the little details as if it were a simple action, without any emphasis or close-up shot. It is uncertain if these little details are an accidental gesture of the character or a subtle intention of the writer. Either way, they still somehow make viewers happy.

Ji sunbae especially impresses viewers with the moment he sticks the note on his shirt. This is considered a brilliant detail that the writer came up with. A simple yet delicate and natural action. Viewers can’t help but praise the writer for such a tiny but adorable scene. If other people would put it on the table like a common sense, he sticks it onto his heart, showing that he really appreciates every single thing Hye Jin gives him.

Ji PD is adored by viewers thanks to his bright personality. Viewers find themselves in a difficult situation if they were Hye Jin. It would be impossible to choose between Chief Hong and Ji PD. To be fair, both the male lead and the second male lead have good points. Ji PD has to appear for Du Sik to clearly determine his feelings for Hye Jin.

Ji PD’s may not be as handsome as the male lead, but the sunbae character is also delicate, soft, and kind hearted like Chief Hong. Many viewers can’t help but feel sorry for him, because he has carried these feelings for 14 years after all. Even though he missed the chance with Hye Jin once, when he finally has the courage to confess to Hye Jin, she already falls for Du Sik.

Ji PD is such a cute and kind sunbae. He always gives the female lead a particularly warm and soft affection.  Although he is only a supporting actor, his image makes viewers smile because of his innocence and cuteness.

Although he fails to win Hye Jin’s heart, he still supports his friend Du Sik. He even reminds Du Sik to take good care of Hye Jin. He might not be the perfect example of a second male lead syndrome in Korean dramas, but he has surely captured the hearts of many Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha viewers.

Although Ji PD and Hye Jin can’t end up together, his appearance is still a highlight and he is not overshadowed by Chief Hong. Viewers enjoy watching Ji PD, but they are probably also pleased with how his romance with Hye Jin wraps up. To like someone doesn’t always mean to “go after them till the end” right? Ji Seung Hyun is definitely one of the most special second male leads in Korean dramas.

Through this character, viewers learn the lesson that if you have feelings for someone, have the guts to say it out loud. Otherwise if you keep quiet, you will miss the opportunity. Perhaps actor Lee Sang Yi is suitable for such pitiful second male lead roles. In both Youth Of May and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, he can’t succeed in winning the female leads’ hearts..

Hopefully, in the upcoming episodes, the writer will develop the romance between him and writer Wang – who secretly has a crush on him all this time, because Ji PD deserves the same sincere love he has for Hye Jin.
