For the first time at the Oscars, an actor received the award without anyone clapping

Troy Kotsur became the first deaf man in academy history to win an Oscar for acting.

On March 28th, the Oscars 2022 ceremony took place with an extremely meaningful and emotional moment when deaf actor Troy Kotsur received the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in CODA. He was the first deaf actor to win an Oscar.

Troy Kotsur ‘s victory filled the stands with happiness and tears. “Grandmother” Youn Yuh Jung, the Best Supporting Actress winner at the Oscars 2021 used sign language when announcing the award with Troy Kotsur. All the actors and guests, instead of clapping in the usual way, waved their hands in the air to show their congratulations for deaf people like Troy Kotsur.

Troy Kotsur accepted the award in sign language: “This is amazing to be here on this journey. I cannot believe I’m here.” The show’s interpreter also couldn’t hold back tears when conveying the actor’s words to the audience.

Kotsur was born deaf in 1968 and grew up in Mesa, Ariz. In CODA, the actor plays the deaf father of his daughter who has the same impairment.
