Originally a shy kid

Choi Woo Sik was born in 1990 in Seoul, Korea, but later immigrated with his family to the suburbs of Vancouver in Canada. At that time, the boy Woo Sik was still quite shy, did not have good communication and was not fluent in English, so he was always made fun of by his friends. However, Choi Woo Sik once revealed that changing to fit into Canadian culture has contributed to making it easier for him to adapt on the path to becoming an actor.

Unlike many other actors, Choi Woo Sik got into acting quite late. He originally passed the Computer Engineering exam in Canada, but in 2010, Woo Sik secretly returned to his home country without telling his parents to participate in an audition for a movie when he was only a 20-year-old freshman in college.

The audition did not end well, but because he received good reviews from the judges, he decided to stay in Korea to pursue his dream, despite his family’s objections. He took another college entrance exam and majored in Cultural Studies while diligently participating in auditions. Choi Woo Sik‘s perseverance finally paid off when in 2011, he got his first roles in Living in Style and The Duo.

Journey to become a movie star

With his talent and relentless efforts, Choi Woo Sik has made a name for himself throughout Asia. Since 2012, he has received supporting roles in series and movies such as Rooftop Prince, Secretly, Greatly, Who Are You?, Fated To Love You… In 2014, he earned his first leading role in the coming-of-age film Set Me Free. This movie took his career to the next level. With his performance in Set Me Free, Choi Woo Sik won 7 awards at major arts awards in Korea, including Best New Actor at the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2015.

In 2016, he starred in the box office hit Train To Busan and left a strong impression on the audience despite getting a small role. In 2019, he was offered a part in the Oscars-winning film Parasite, which is considered the biggest and most memorable role in his career to this day.

Stir up the box office with Parasite

Parasite is the first blockbuster in Korean film history to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In the movie, he transforms into Ki Woo – the first son of a poor family in Seoul, and it all started when he accepted to work as a tutor for the daughter of an upper-class family. The film depicts the contrast between the lives of the rich and the poor, the opposition so great that it creates tragedy at the end of the film.

Dating rumor with Park Seo Joon

Choi Woo Sik has a very close friendship with Park Seo Joon, the male lead of Itaewon Class.  The two first met on the KBS2 sitcom Family Trouble in 2013. After that, the two were suspected of having a relationship beyond friendship while filming the kiss scene and were repeatedly spotted hanging out together.

The two are so close that they often appear as cameos in each other’s movies, as evidenced by Seo Joon also appearing at the beginning of Parasite, or Woo Sik also appearing in a scene of Fight For My Way.
