Despite BTS’s absence, special stages and collaborations are expected to heat up 2021 year-end music festivals

Broadcasters are worrying about a season of KPOP year-end awards ceremonies and festivals without the main character’s appearance.

The season of year-end music festivals, including Mnet MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards), held by 3 major broadcasters in Korea, is one of the indispensable annual events for KPOP fans. Although there are still several restrictions for live stages and audiences’ participation due to the pandemic spread, fans’ expectations are still enthusiastic. In particular, as global interest in KPOP has become greater than ever, music festivals to wrap up this year are expected to be enjoyed by KPOP fans all over the world regardless of awards and rankings.

Unfortunately, BTS, who wrote another history for KPOP this year, announced their absence from all domestic awards ceremonies after finishing this year’s schedule with their U.S shows on December 6th. In order to not let their shows be called “cakes without fillings”, each broadcaster has decided to prepare special stages of popular idol groups to wash away fans’ disappointment.

Earlier, at the 2021 MAMA held on December 11th, Mnet planned to bring the project boy group Wanna One, which had already disbanded, back on stage as a whole group once again to fill in the vacancy of BTS, the winner of 4 daesangs. Lee Hyo-ri and “Street Woman Fighter” dancers, who have attracted the most attention this year, burned the stage with a spectacular joint performance.

The 2021 KBS Song Festival to be held on December 17th will also showcase various collaborations. “Brothers” of the same company TXT and Enhypen will present a cover stage of 8 groups, from the 1st generation idol H.O.T to the global star BTS. TXT and Enhypen, who have become famous since their debut as BTS’s “brother” and “cousin” groups, respectively, have also gained huge fandoms for themselves. Therefore, this has raised fans’ high expectations for a high-quality collaboration.
