Broadcasters are worrying about a season of KPOP year-end awards ceremonies and festivals without the main character’s appearance.
The season of year-end music festivals, including Mnet MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards), held by 3 major broadcasters in Korea, is one of the indispensable annual events for KPOP fans. Although there are still several restrictions for live stages and audiences’ participation due to the pandemic spread, fans’ expectations are still enthusiastic. In particular, as global interest in KPOP has become greater than ever, music festivals to wrap up this year are expected to be enjoyed by KPOP fans all over the world regardless of awards and rankings.
Unfortunately, BTS, who wrote another history for KPOP this year, announced their absence from all domestic awards ceremonies after finishing this year’s schedule with their U.S shows on December 6th. In order to not let their shows be called “cakes without fillings”, each broadcaster has decided to prepare special stages of popular idol groups to wash away fans’ disappointment.
Earlier, at the 2021 MAMA held on December 11th, Mnet planned to bring the project boy group Wanna One, which had already disbanded, back on stage as a whole group once again to fill in the vacancy of BTS, the winner of 4 daesangs. Lee Hyo-ri and “Street Woman Fighter” dancers, who have attracted the most attention this year, burned the stage with a spectacular joint performance.
The 2021 KBS Song Festival to be held on December 17th will also showcase various collaborations. “Brothers” of the same company TXT and Enhypen will present a cover stage of 8 groups, from the 1st generation idol H.O.T to the global star BTS. TXT and Enhypen, who have become famous since their debut as BTS’s “brother” and “cousin” groups, respectively, have also gained huge fandoms for themselves. Therefore, this has raised fans’ high expectations for a high-quality collaboration.
In addition, a stage consisting of 9 members from 6 girl groups, including Red Velvet, Oh My Girl, Brave Girls, ITZY, StayC and IVE, will be presented. This unit is expected to comfort the public who is tired of the COVID-19 situation by working together with SNSD‘s “Way To Go”.
A special performance called “K-Pop and K-Cultural Heritage’‘ will also be set up. Stray Kids and Oh My Girl will show off Korea’s beauty to fans around the world by performing against the backdrop of Namhansanseong and Goseokjeong Pavilion respectively.
“2021 SBS Gayo Daejeon“, which will be broadcast live on Dec 25th, will meet the audience offline for the first time in 2 years to present a special Christmas. A total of 25 teams, including NCT 127, NCT DREAM, NU’EST, Red Velvet, Oh My Girl, Brave Girls, Astro, THE BOYZ, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, TXT, StayC, aespa, ENHYPEN and IVE, will decorate collaboration stages that cannot be seen anywhere else. Besides, Boom, SHINee Key and ITZY Yuna confirmed to host this year’s event.
Meanwhile, the lineup of singers appearing at “2021 MBC Gayo Daejejeon” remains a secret. Aside from SNSD Yoona and Jang Sung-kyu, 2PM Junho – who is loved for MBC’s drama “The Red Sleeve” – will join forces to lead this year’s festivities. “2020 MBC Gayo Daejejeon” delivered special stages such as Uhm Jung-hwa X Mamamoo Hwasa, Rain X JYP and Song Ga-in X Henry. Therefore, people are raising expectations for unconventional collaboration stages at “2021 MBC Gayo Daejejeon” as well.
