BTS Suga, who recently made his comeback as “Agust D”, recalled the tough experiences of the past.
On April 24, episode 9 of “Suchwita” was uploaded on the official YouTube channel of BTS, “BANGTANTV”. This time, “Suchwita” was hosted by BTS RM, who interviewed Suga on his new album “D-DAY”, which was released under Suga’s pseudo, Agust D.
Here, RM asked Suga to explain the meaning of Agust D and the title of his album, “D-DAY”. To this, Suga said, “I think I should tell you how I came up with the name Agust D first”, adding, “D, T (Daegu Town), so if you read D Town SUGA backwards, it becomes Agust D. In BTS’s ‘Cypher PT.3: KILLER(Feat. Supreme Boi)’, I wrote, ‘SUGA a.k.a Agust D – my second name’ in the lyrics. It was like a brief teaser.”
“Then I released my first mixtape titled “Agust D”. That was in 2016”, he continued, adding, “2015 and 2016 were really tough years for us that I don’t even want to remember. Even though things were going really well for us, I had all these complicated feelings. I was like, ‘I’ll show you how raw my music can be’.”
According to Suga, his songs at the time were really aggressive, and as ‘Agust D’, he talked about a lot of things that were hard to talk about as an idol. However, it wasn’t like he was separating a part of himself, but rather just about expressing himself with less limits.
Suga then went on to reveal that “D-DAY” is the last part of the ‘Agust D’ trilogy, and that D-Day is an end, but also the start of a new beginning. When asked if he would not use the name Agust D after this, Suga said, “I have a lot of thoughts about it“, before saying that he will probably release a solo album as ‘Suga’.
“I need to separate the two”, Suga also admitted, adding that the messages and stories may be too heavy to release as Suga.
Afterwards, RM asked if Suga thought Agust D and SUGA were different characters. To this, Suga responded, “Yeah, I divided it up a little. There’s Producer SUGA, just SUGA
and Agust D, these three, ‘Produced by SUGA’ is something I use when I work on external projects. As ‘Prod. SUGA’, I always just focus on the artist and the public.”
The male idol and producer also said, “And as SUGA, since I’m a member of BTS, I focus on BTS’s music”, adding, “As Agust D, I wanted to say everything I wanted to say. That was my original idea, without having to filter things.”
Finally, Suga confessed, “But as Agust D, I talked a lot about myself. So now, I don’t have anything more to say, and that made me fall into a huge slump. It was so bad that I even thought ‘I’ve used up everything I have to create my music. Now what should I do?’.”
He also compared this experience to be as difficult as when BTS released “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life”, adding, “That’s why I agonized a lot about whether to release it as SUGA or Agust D.”
