BTS’ “Butter” returns to #1 on Billboard Hot 100, netizens are upset when someone with great merit doesn’t get credit?
BTS’ Butter has returned to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with some new controversy.
Not surprisingly, with BTS teaming up with popular female rapper Megan Thee Stallion to release a remix for ‘Butter’ last Friday, the song has officially returned to the number one position on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, once again BTS’ #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 is controversial, due to the crediting of their collaborator – Megan Thee Stallion.
Specifically, Billboard recorded Butter returning to #1 right after the release of a remix featuring Megan Thee Stallion, marking the 10th week (non-consecutive) that the song held the No.1.This week, Butter sold 143 thousand copies (up 108% compared to the previous week), continuing to hold the #1 position for the 14th week on the Digital Song Sales component chart.
Besides, thanks to the collaboration with an extremely strong female artist in streaming, Megan Thee Stallion, ‘Butter’ brought in 10.7 million streams this week (up to 110%), ranked 35th in the Streaming Songs component chart. Its radio index also dropped 39% to 12.2 million.
With the release of this remix version in collaboration with a big name of the US-UK music industry, BTS’ fans around the world have launched a strong campaign to consume digital sales (including the original version and remixes) and benefit greatly from Megan Thee Stallion’s powerful streaming effects. And the result was a #1 Billboard Hot 100 spot, which is not surprising.
However, controversy broke out when Megan Thee Stallion was not given credit on this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart, meaning that she did not have one more song that reached the number one position as desired. Last week, Megan Thee Stallion made a fuss when suing her record label for not allowing her to release a remix of Butter with BTS, claiming that this action severely damaged her music career.
The record label then permitted her to release the remix as scheduled, effectively ending the litigation. Megan Thee Stallion was supposed to easily reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but things didn’t go as expected.
According to Billboard, the song “Butter” this week solely credited BTS and did not include the name Megan Thee Stallion since the remix’s total index was still not comparable to the original. Meanwhile, in order for Megan Thee Stallion’s name to appear in the credits, the remix with her name must have a total index of at least 50%. The original and BTS’ own remixes (Hotter, Cooler, Sweeter) will, of course, outsell a remix starring Megan Thee Stallion in the digital sales section alone.
Megan Thee Stallion only enjoys a little bit of success when she gets credits on the Streaming Songs component chart. This is understandable when the remix featuring her vocals accounted for more than 50% of the streaming index this week. To be honest, even BTS fans have to agree that Butter’s return to #1 was thanks to Megan Thee Stallion’s appearance; hence the fact that she wasn’t in the credits exasperated netizens!
