Korean netizens have chosen 7 names who they thought to be the best in the K-Pop industry.

Recently, a vote on Instiz got the attention of fandoms in Korea. According to the result, apart from the legendary Seo Taiji, the top 7 idol groups of all time are H.O.T, g.o.d, DBSK, Big Bang, Wonder Girls, Girls Generation and BTS.

1. H.O.T

H.O.T debut in 1996 with 5 members Moon Hee Jun, Jang Woo Hyuk, Kangta, Tony An, Lee Jae Won and they were the start of SM’s idol empire. They were the first group to start all the definition of K-Pop fandoms’ culture such as balloon color, fanclub, fanmeeting, fanfic,…Even during the economic depression in South Korea, H.O.T were still able to become the first Korean artist to reach 1 million album sales. The drama “Reply 1997” once mentioned about this legend as a inseperable part of teenagers’ lifestyle at that time.

Famous hits: Candy, Happiness, We are the future…

2. g.o.d

g.o.d was the first K-Pop group to be called “the national group” thanks to their fandom which had both young people and middle aged people. The 5 boys Park Joon Hyung, Yun Gyeong Sang, Danny Ahn, Son Ho Young, Kim Tae Woo debut in 1999 and focused mostly on ballad songs. They were also one of the first groups to achieve a 1 million album sales even though the media wasn’t as widespread as today.

Famous hits: Love and Remember, Sorrow, Road…

Having been in this industry for 15 years but TVXQ is still looked up as “the king of album sales of all time” in the K-Pop industry. They debut in 2003 with a 5-member line-up but only Changmin and Yunho stayed after the sueing scandal in 2009. Despite all the younger juniors’ continuous debuts and a long silence due to enlistment, TVXQ are still stable. In 2018, the total income 15 years after their debut reached 1,2 billion USD, surpassed both BIG BANG and EXO. One of the main reasons which have given them the success is their loyal and big spender fandom.

4. Big Bang

Korea’s first mainstream hip-hop idol group – Big Bang – debuted in 2006. The group has 5 members: G-Dragon, T.O.P, Tae Yang, Dae Sung and Seung Ri. With a charismatic voice and a distinctive style, Big Bang leads the trend of electronic music that attracted fans who were passionate about them. The group is also known for contributing to the music production itself. After more than 12 years of debuting, all have solo products with certain successes and they are not inferior to the big projects of the group. Especially, there are rare Kpop idols who experience many events and scandals like Big Bang but still retain their reputation, influence and love from fans.

Famous hits: Lies, Haru Haru, Fantastic Baby, Bang Bang Bang …

5. Wonder Girls

It is no coincidence that Wonder Girls are called Kpop queens in the 2007-2009 golden generation. The group has a lot of member changes, but the Sun Ye, So Hee, Ye Eun, Yu Bin and Sun Mi lineup are still the most loved one by fans. The 5 JYP girls do not have the looks that are too glamorous but score points thanks to the extremely unique retro color music style.

In 2009, the song Nobody marked a great step forward in the career of Wonder Girls as it surpassed the Korean or Asian market and strongly covered international audiences. Unfortunately, at the peak of their career, the group rushed to the US market and did not really impress in this market.

GIRLS’ GENERATION debuted in 2007 with a 9-member lineup: Tae Yeon, Jessica, Tiffany, Seo Hyun, Yuri, Hyo Yeon, Sunny, Yoon Ah and Soo Young. When they first debuted, the group faced many objections from the audience. However, 9 girls with their efforts have gradually become a national girl group with a strong influence on the public. During 12 years of operation, GIRLS’ GENERATION showed that the group is really “legendary” when being stable even in front of the scandal that seemed to destroy the career. At the peak of GIRLS’ GENERATION operation, they repeatedly won over boy groups at a series of major awards ceremonies. Members also have a successful career in many areas of the entertainment industry. Currently, the group has only 5 members (Tae Yeon, Yoon Ah, Yuri, Hyo Yeon and Sunny) which are still working under SM.

7. BTS

Big Hit’s Boygroup debuted in 2013 with the extremely difficult condition during the first 2 years of operation. However, after the 2017 Billboard Music Awards ceremony, BTS had a wonderful change. From a “regular” music group, BTS is now the new king of Kpop, beginning a brilliant era with a series of record-breaking achievements and a series of victories.

Explaining the reason for the “once in a hundred years’ success in Kpop” by BTS, experts believe that the group has a strong connection to music with the public. BTS is highly appreciated for its ability to compose and convey its own message to the audience. The union between 7 members: RM, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook are also factors that make the group have the power to overcome all barriers and challenges when coming from a small company with many disadvantages. Currently, BTS not only dominates Kpop but is also known as the most famous boy group in the world and the group always ranked among the top artists in the world.
