A woman accused famous Korean director ‘B’ of sexually assaulting her 18 years ago

A famous film director was recently accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the past.

According to Yonhap News on the 1st, a woman ‘A’ recently filed a complaint against the male director ‘B’ to Seodaemun Police Station, Seoul on charges of rape. Accordingly, A first met director B in October 2003, with the introduction of an acquaintance. They then had a meal and a drink together.

According to A, from the first meeting, B gave her underwear. Then when the group (including this woman, director B and their acquaintances) moved into the hotel, B waited for the other person to fall asleep and then called A to a private room and raped her. Person A said, “It was resentful and painful.” She added, saying: “I can’t even sue because B is a celebrity, and I am also worried about the stigma against a woman who has been sexually assaulted.”

A was unable to denounce B at that time. Even after the MeToo movement broke out, A had to receive psychological treatment because it recalled her that incident. According to A, she still has relevant evidence such as the clothes she was wearing at the time and the underwear B gave her.

Yang Tae-jeong, a lawyer at a law firm who is A’s legal representative, said: “The victim, after a long period of suffering, mustered up the courage to speak up.” In this regard, director B directly claimed that A’s accusation was “groundless” and affirmed that he would sue this woman. In a phone call with Yonhap News, Mr. B said, “There was no sexual assault, and the gift of underwear was from another acquaintance, not me.

Meanwhile, some say that the case claimed by A occurred 18 years ago, making it difficult to punish the culprit as at the time it had passed the statute of limitations of 10 years under the Criminal Procedure Act. In response, the complainant claimed, “The period remains until October 2023 under the revised Sexual Violence Punishment Act, which requires a 10-year extension of the statute of limitations if there is scientific evidence to prove the crime.”
