Late actor Song Young-gyu, who suddenly passed away last year, left a memorable final performance through his posthumous work, the Netflix series “Teach You a Lesson.”
Released on June 5, Netflix original series “Teach You a Lesson” tells the story of the Educational Rights Protection Bureau, an organization established to protect South Korea’s collapsing educational system and teachers’ authority against unruly students, teachers, and parents who have crossed the line.
Actors Kim Mu-yeol, Lee Sung-min, Jin Ki-joo, and Pyo Ji-hoon lead the cast.

Episode 1, which opened the series, follows Na Hwa-jin (played by Kim Mu-yeol), a supervisor at the Educational Rights Protection Bureau, as he visits Daehan High School after student Park Dae-seok (Jeong Soo-hyun) dies by suicide due to school violence. There, Na Hwa-jin confronts the misconduct of Ryu Jun-hyeong (Lee Seung-gyu) and his group, who abused their influence and power within the school.
Song Young-gyu portrayed Ryu Gwang-pil, the father of Ryu Jun-hyeong and a presidential candidate from the ruling Happy Hope Party. As his son’s wrongdoing risks being exposed due to the intervention of the Educational Rights Protection Bureau, Ryu Gwang-pil attempts to use his political influence and authority to cover up corruption and suppress the situation.

The late actor was praised for convincingly portraying a complex character who ultimately falls from power and ends up imprisoned alongside his son, deepening viewers’ immersion in the drama.
Having completed filming last year, “Teach You a Lesson” became Song Young-gyu’s final work. Previously, the actor shocked the public when he was found dead inside a vehicle in a residential area in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on August 4 last year just 10 days after being referred to prosecutors on drunk driving charges. He was 55 years old. His remains were laid to rest at Hambaeksan Memorial Park.

At the time of his death, Song was appearing in SBS drama “The Winning Try,” ENA’s “The Defects,” and the stage production “Shakespeare in Love.” Following the tragic news, the drama production teams reportedly planned to minimize his screen time, while he stepped down from the theater production.
Over the years, Song Young-gyu became known as a standout supporting actor through numerous hit projects, including dramas “Misaeng: Incomplete Life,” “Reply 1988,” “The Penthouse 3,” and “Narco-Saints,” as well as films “Another Public Enemy,” “Extreme Job,” and “Land of Happiness.” Though brief, his striking presence in “Teach You a Lesson,” revealed 10 months after his passing, has left a lingering emotional impact on viewers who still miss him.
