The Japanese adult film industry has been rocked by tragic news: 28-year-old AV actress Meiko Nakao has reportedly passed away. Her close friend, veteran AV actress Hibari Hijiri (聖ひばり), confirmed the heartbreaking news in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).
In a long message posted on November 13, Hibari Hijiri expressed her deep sorrow. She described Meiko Nakao as a sweet, younger-sister-like figure in her life. The two often spent time together or chatted on the phone. However, their contact had waned recently because of personal matters Hibari didn’t want to burden Meiko with. Tragically, the next time she reached out, it was too late.

Overwhelmed with guilt, Hibari wrote, “If I had noticed something was wrong and had been there for her, maybe this wouldn’t have happened.” She tearfully apologized: “I did absolutely nothing for her. I’m truly, truly sorry.”
She also admitted to struggling with whether to keep the news private. But she feared that silence would only leave Meiko feeling even more alone, even in death. She ultimately decided to speak out so fans would know the truth and remember her. In a heartfelt message to Meiko, she wrote: “Ome-chan, you’ll always be an important friend to me. I really, really liked you.”

AV critic and blogger Ichiken Kanshunshu also shared his thoughts online, noting that Hibari Hijiri had recently discussed the mental health challenges faced by adult film actresses. He pointed out that this issue has long been overlooked in the industry and went so far as to say, “Perhaps ensuring actresses’ mental stability makes some people uncomfortable.” He strongly believes that Meiko Nakao may have taken her own life , and closed with, “From the bottom of my heart, I hope Meiko Nakao rests in peace.”
