After the year of 2019 with a single music product called Kill This Love, BlackPink had a remarkable comeback in 2020 – claiming to be the top girl group in Kpop today. At the end of April, the four girls were suddenly confirmed to be featured in the sixth studio album called Chromatica by the world-famous singer Lady Gaga with a song called Sour Candy.
Just after a short time of release, the above song entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 33, becoming BlackPink’s highest-ranking song in the US (at that time). In Australia, the song debuted at No. 8 – becoming BlackPink’s first single to reach the top 10 in this country. Sour Candy also became the group’s first song to get the top 20 in the UK, debuted at No. 17.
After the success of the song above, in mid-May, YG confirmed that Blackpink would release a paving song in June, a single in July or August to promote the group’s first Korean full- album. After a long wait, How You Like That was officially released on June 26. The song quickly achieved impressive achievements: Debuting at No. 12 on the Gaon Digital Chart in just 1 day and 16 hours and peaking at # 1 on digital charts, downloads, and streaming at the 2nd week after its release, getting perfect all-kill certification in the Korean market.
On August 28, 2020, BlackPink released a new single, Ice Cream – feat American female singer Selena Gomez. The song reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the first week of its release – becoming Blackpink’s highest-ranking song on this chart. Following the success, on October 2, the girl group released the first full album in their career.
BlackPink’s The Album quickly sold over 1 million copies (certified by Gaon), becoming the first Korean girl group to do this. It also reached # 2 on the Billboard 200 and UK Album Chart, helping the four girls become the Korean female artists with the highest ranking on these two charts. In the same month, Blackpink officially got the ruby button from Youtube when their official channel reached more than 50 million followers on this platform and is the only Asian female artist to do this so far.
With all of the above achievements, BlackPink deserves to be recognized as the most successful girl group in 2020 globally, far beyond the Korean market.
