2 lesbian couples become the hottest topic on the Korean small screen

‘Mine’ and ‘Nevertheless’ constantly have lesbian love stories that attract the audience’s attention.

Homosexuality is a sensitive topic in South Korea, rarely discussed publicly on television.  However, recently, Korean dramas are increasingly boldly breaking the rules, referring more to lesbian love stories.  “Mine” produced by tvN and “Nevertheless” by JTBC are two films featuring lesbian couples that are loved by both international fans and Korean audiences.

Jung Seo Hyun – Choi Suzy (Mine)

‘Mine’ focuses on the life of the tycoon’s daughter-in-law, the wealth belongs to 1% in Korea.  Right from episode 2, the film made the audience “shocked” when it was revealed that the eldest aunt Jung Seo Hyun had a same-sex relationship in the past.  Despite being married, the eldest aunt still holds on to her old love and keeps the memory of Choi Suzy even though the two have broken up for many years.  Later, female artist Suzy returned to Korea, wanted to find a way to contact Jung Seo Hyun, but the daughter-in-law of the Hyowon family often tried to avoid it.

The tormented love story between two women became the highlight of the film’s loveline.  With the delicate acting of Kim Seo Hyung and Kim Jung Hwa, lesbian love is expressed in a civilized, emotional way and makes even the most difficult Korean audience feel.

Jung Seo Hyun is a modest person, holding the role of the head of the family and later becoming the director of the corporation.  She is a successful character, has a decent public image but has a stormy interior with a secret love story that goes against the usual standards and is forbidden by society.  The auntie struggled throughout Mine to finally “come out” in front of her husband’s family and decided to go see Suzy.  The love story of Jung Seo Hyun – Choi Suzy is the process of “the elephant getting out of the wall”, there are no intimate scenes, but every line makes viewers sob.

Ji Wan – Yoon Sol (Nevertheless)

However, about the love of university students, besides the 19+ love story of the main couple, Ji Wan – Sol is a factor attracting a significant number of viewers even though each episode only has a few minutes to air.  Initially, the two were close friends since childhood, Ji Wan even entered the art university to be with Sol.  When he realized his feelings, Sol did not want to break their ten-year strong friendship.  Not affirming feelings, but Ji Wan also clearly shows jealousy when Sol has someone to pursue or hide about studying abroad.  The quarrels and shyness between the pair of “cotton chickens” made the audience excited, waiting for each episode to watch.

In the latest episode, Ji Wan had a “confession” moment to Sol when drunk, causing a stir on social networks: “I like you the most, more than my parents. I like you the most in the world.  How about you? Do you like Jae Heok or Sehun? I hate them. Stop hanging out with them. Just like me. Please.”  Viewers are asking the director to increase the screen time of Ji Wan – Sol and give them a happy ending because this couple is too sweet.

The actress who takes on the role of Yoon Sol is Lee Ho Jung – YG’s “chicken”, 24 years old.  Ho Jung has a cool, cool look that makes the audience unable to take their eyes off the scenes with her appearance.

Taking on the role of Seo Ji Wan in the film is 21-year-old actress Yoon Seo A. Before however, she had only played small roles in the films Bad Papa and Love Revolution.  Seo A’s cute and sweet features helped her character Ji Wan shine.
