As a prequel of the series “Chief Inspector”, “Chief Detective 1958”, which premiered on MBC on April 19th, follows Detective Park Young-han (Lee Je-hoon), who specializes in apprehending petty thieves, as a team with three unique colleagues, breaking down the absurdities of corrupt power with common sense, and being reborn as a detective for the people.
The first episode recorded 10.1% nationwide, 10.3% in the metropolitan area and peaked at 12.4% (Nielsen Korea). This marked a double-digit viewership from the first episode, setting a record as the highest-rated first episode of all MBC Friday-Saturday dramas. It also garnered attention with a 3.2% viewership among those aged 20~49, indicating a promising start.
Currently, tvN’s Saturday-Sunday drama “Queen of Tears” is dominating the small screen.
Episode 12 achieved average ratings of 23.2%, peaking at 25.2% in the metropolitan area and average ratings of 20.7%, peaking at 22.6% nationwide, breaking its own highest ratings for 5 consecutive weeks. It secured the top spot in the simultaneous time slot across all channels, proving its unrivaled dominance among weekend dramas.
“Queen of Tears” has already surpassed “Goblin” to become the second-highest-rated tvN drama. However, with just two weeks until its conclusion, “Chief Detective 1958” has stepped in with formidable momentum from the first episode.
If “Queen of Tears” is tvN’s most anticipated drama of the year, “Chief Detective 1958” is undoubtedly MBC’s confident card. While it may be unrealistic for “Chief Detective 1958” to surpass the ratings and buzz of “Queen of Tears” as it approaches its conclusion, both Kim Soo-hyun and Lee Je-hoon, as top actors, are delivering stellar performances. The competition between them over the next two weeks is attracting significant attention.
