K-Drama Actress Weighing Up to 100kg Just for a Role?

Actress Kim Soo Hyun, better known as Claudia Kim, is currently grabbing headlines for her return in Netflix’s upcoming drama “The Atypical Family”. What’s making her comeback stand out is her portrayal of a young woman weighing up to 100kg.

Seeing Claudia in this new look, viewers couldn’t help but be taken aback. Many didn’t even recognize Claudia until she showed up at the drama’s press conference on May 2nd. Turns out, Claudia underwent a transformation to appear heavier, without actually gaining weight.

The director revealed the meticulous process Claudia went through to achieve this appearance: “She spent nearly 7 to 8 hours on makeup before filming, and then had to invest a lot of time in removing it. Doing such special makeup on an actress’ skin may not have been comfortable and could have had consequences. I’m truly grateful to her.”

In “The Atypical Family”, Claudia plays Dong Hee, who loses her ability to fly due to her body becoming heavy. Even Claudia herself didn’t recognize herself when seeing images of her character. 

Previously, Claudia was known for her alluring figure, which contributed to her success as both a model and actress in Korea and Hollywood. She decided on this drastic transformation because she found the script of the drama to be brighter and more humane than her previous works.

Claudia is a renowned actress, noted as the first Korean actress to join a Marvel film when she appeared in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015, followed by “Equals” (2015), “The Dark Tower” (2017), and more. She continues to make her mark in Hollywood. Despite her Hollywood success, Claudia still longs to prove herself in her home country. 

“The Atypical Family” revolves around characters with different supernatural abilities. Dong Hee can fly and is the older sister of the male lead, Gwi Joo (Jang Ki Young), who can time travel but only to revisit happy moments in his life. 

While Gwi Joo loses his ability due to depression and can’t change anything despite going back in time, Dong Hee loses her flying ability due to food addiction. Gradually, other family members also lose their abilities due to various reasons, completely disrupting their lives.
